Kayla Resendes is an award-winning filmmaker, and recent graduate from Ryerson University’s Film Studies program. With credits as a writer, director, and producer, she aims to tell stories that deeply examine human relationships at their core. These stories often embody themes of isolation, love, and innocence.

The Citizen follows Fernando Ortiz, who moved to Canada from Chile during the dictatorship of Pinochet in the 1980s. A true believer in the “American Dream”, he explains why his journey to becoming a Canadian citizen took him over 25 years.

Rebeca Ortiz is a Toronto-filmmaker whose short films have screened and gained recognition across festivals internationally. Alongside collaborator Alicia K. Harris, she is dedicated to creating stories that feature women and marginalized through their production company Sugar Glass Films.

Maddy Pilon is a Ryerson Film Studies graduate based in Toronto, Ontario. She has spent a lot of her time teaching filmmaking to youth, and recently produced a feature film titled Goliath.

Panelist: Marsha Greene
Marsha Greene has written for Global’s hit series Private Eyes, ABC’s Ten Days in the Valley, and the critically acclaimed Global/Lifetime drama Mary Kills People, for which she earned a Canadian Screen Award nomination. Currently, Marsha is the co-executive producer of the third and final season of Mary Kills People, and is developing a one-hour drama series with CBC.

Panelist: Jasmin Mozaffari
Jasmin is a Toronto-based filmmaker who graduated from Ryerson University’s Film Studies Program in 2013. Her student thesis film Firecrackers (2013), premiered at TIFF and was followed by her next short WAVE (2015), which premiered at the Vancouver International Film Festival and Aesthetica Short Film Festival in the UK. FIRECRACKERS (2018) is Jasmin’s first feature, expanded from the 2013 short, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2018.

Performer: Michaela Washburn
Michaela Washburn hails from Alberta and is a proud Métis artist of English, Irish, French and Cree descent. Her expertise spans theatre, film, television, hosting, writing, spoken word, clown, improvisation, workshop facilitation and stand-up. An award winning artist for her portrayal of Louis Riel in VideoCabaret’s Confederation Series, Michaela also has multiple nominations. Most notably, for the Ontario Arts Council’s Indigenous Arts Award and the K. M. Hunter Artist Award for Theatre.
