Chinese-born, U.S.-raised Billi reluctantly returns to Changchun to find that, although the whole family knows their beloved matriarch, Nai-Nai, has been given mere weeks to live, everyone has decided not to tell Nai Nai herself.

Lulu Wang is a classical pianist turned filmmaker. Her second feature The Farewell, starring Awkwafina, premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival in U.S. Dramatic Competition where the film was picked up for worldwide distribution by A24. Lulu was listed by Variety as Ten Directors To Watch in 2019.

Talkback Moderator

Betty Xie is an Asian Canadian filmmaker and curator. She was previously part of the programming team at TIFF Docs and Reel Asian Film Festival. In her filmmaking practice, she is committed to tell stories about how cultural practices shape diaspora identity formation. Most recently, she produced the CBC Short Doc A Sweet and Sour Christmas, which tells the story of a family-run Chinese Canadian restaurant pumping out takeout orders with labour and love on Christmas.

Tiffany Hsiung is a Toronto-based filmmaker. Her award-winning documentary debut, The Apology (16) produced by The National Film Board of Canada, has won over a dozen awards internationally, including the prestigious Peabody Award and the Allan King Memorial Award presented by the Documentary Organization of Canada.

Dr. Craig Kung is a palliative care physician currently practicing at the Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket. He was born and raised in Scarborough to parents of Chinese descent, both of who immigrated to Canada with their families at a young age. Dr. Kung completed his undergraduate medicine degree in 2016 at McMaster University in Hamilton, followed by residency training in family medicine at the University of Western Ontario in London. He then went on to complete further training in palliative care through the University of Toronto at North York General Hospital. As a palliative care physician, he hopes to bring comfort to patients and their families who are suffering from terminal illnesses or who are at end of life.
