Film Synopsis:
Street Gang takes us inside the minds and hearts of the Sesame Street creators to help us understand not only how they produced this groundbreaking show, but also what it was like to be at the center of a cultural and social phenomenon. Street Gang concentrates on the most experimental and groundbreaking period of Sesame Street. The original surviving creators weave together personal narratives, and never before seen behind the scenes footage to reveal how they collaborated to push every boundary that confronted them, changing television, and changing the world.
About our pre-show programming:
The Children’s Book Bank provides free books and literacy support to children and families in high-needs neighbourhoods across the GTA. Since 2008, the Book Bank has operated a beautiful storefront space located in the Regent Park/St. James Town area, welcoming school, daycare and school groups, as well as families and their children to listen to stories, browse our collection, and choose a favourite book to take home to keep. The Book Bank also provides books and literacy materials through community centres, schools, health clinics and social agencies throughout the city. Since opening, The Children’s Book Bank has given away over 1 million free books.
Healing as One is a grassroots youth group based in the Regent Park community. Our mission is to open dialogue, pave understanding and start healing from the many pains/issues in our micro & macro communities. Our vision is to create a community made up of leaders and visionaries, who are able to empower and pass this (knowledge and leadership) down to the next generation. Our dream is to create a system mobilizing young people to address their community’s concerns with open dialogue, festivities and workshops (which benefit them and the community as well).
Shorts :
Tiny Adaptations: Transformative Justice Frame by Frame is a series of short videos for social change produced by emerging filmmakers in the Transformation is Reel six month video arts residency hosted by SKETCH Working Arts. Facilitated by Jahmal Nugent & Naty Tremblay. Artists in residence were invited to explore through digital media what Transformative Justice means & could look like in these unprecedented times. The results are vulnerable, raw & visionary.
Block by Block is a participatory, multimedia program of the Toronto Ward Museum. We train young people to interview community members in their own neighbourhoods about their lived experiences of migration, settlement and civic life. Block by Block is thrilled to be working in Regent Park from 2019-2022 with support from the Regent Park Film Festival and Toronto Council Fire Native Cultural Centre and grateful to all of the Regent Park community members who have contributed so far.
