Following the first all-female Muslim softball league in North America, Sisterhood Softball depicts a league that empowers women through sports in a community where women traditionally don’t participate and are seen outside of their communities as disempowered.

As a Somali-Canadian filmmaker, Farhiya Ahmed’s interest in storytelling came from exploring complex narratives, social issues, and lived experiences of first and second-generation immigrants. Ahmed explores the untold stories of people in her communities and creates intimate films that are emotionally motivated and driven by deep human connections and relationships.

Allihopa: The Dalkurd Story is the inspirational story of The Dalkurd Football Club, a scrappy group of Kurdish refugees in Sweden who defy all odds to climb the ranks of Sweden’s soccer leagues in hopes of becoming champions, and bringing glory and attention to the plight of their stateless people.

Writer, director and actor, Kordo Doski was born in Kurdistan, Iraq. Due to the political unrest under Saddam’s regime, his family escaped Iraq for Canada. Growing up in Toronto, a very multicultural city, his vast exposure to other cultures, greatly influences his storytelling. In addition to telling stories, Kordo is the Co-founder and Creative Director of Lina Hanson Global Beauty, an Organic skin care line that is known for celebrating the concept of Global Beauty. The brand has received rave reviews by renowned publications such as Allure, Harper’s Bazaar, GQ and Vogue.

Amina Mohamed Panelist

Amina Mohamed is a Physiotherapist and owns her own business, Physio with Amina. She has played ice hockey for twenty years, soccer for twenty-four years, and softball for six years. Amina is a mentor for youth and a sports enthusiast who believes in the power of sports for women’s empowerment.

Farhiya Ahmed Director
