This shorts program tackles the joys and complexities that comes with being face to face with new or uncomfortable situations. Confrontations aren’t easy and these filmmakers capture the nuanced emotions we may feel when overcoming our fears or addressing long held issues.

Fateema is a Queer Palestinian/Canadian filmmaker whose work explores themes of fragmented identity, isolation and connection through “oh no, should I laugh?” comedy. She is passionate about creating nuanced representations of Arabs for the screen and prioritizes making space for marginalized voices in front of and behind the camera.

Recently a graduate from Concordia University, creating art through moving images has given her the means to describe experiences that may otherwise be forgotten or rarely explained. It has given her the power to illustrate blackness and queerness through film as reclamation.

Uproot, directed by Queena Liu, is a film about a family’s silent struggles with mental health care in immigrant communities. Ten years ago, the director’s father was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in his forties and spent two years in and out of a psychiatric hospital. This film documents the director’s first time having an open and honest conversation with her family about his diagnosis that she never could as a child.
